For League members interested in the current controversy over the obelisk in the Santa Fe Plaza and the statewide reckoning with New Mexico’s complex history, native New Mexican and former State Historian Estevan Rael-Gálvez offers a deep perspective on his blog.

Dr. Rael-Gálvez is the former Senior Vice President of Historic Sites at the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He also served as the executive director of the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the state historian of New Mexico and is currently the CEO and the founding principal of Creative Strategies 360°. He received his B.A. at the University of California at Berkeley and his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. An heir to these complex legacies, a native son of New Mexico, with ancestral and living ties to both Native American and Hispano/Chicano communities, he is in the process of completing his book focused on American Indian slavery and legacy.

The entire time I was reading this eloquent, thoughtful and moving history of the Obelisk, I was muttering to myself, "I didn't know that" over and over again. Galvez' telling of the history of the Obelisk is compelling, compassionate and righteous, and his proposal for reimagining the monument is creative and forward thinking. His recommendation to "evolve the monument", not demolish it or remove it to a museum, seeks to "re-present" history to include what is not present on the monument: an acknowledgment of all the people enslaved, shamed, wounded, killed and dispossessed in the course of the history of New Mexico. His proposal is not "cancel culture"; he is asking us instead to reveal the whole story, own it, and make amends by speaking truth and showing respect for the victims of that story. To paraphrase, "But not for the grace of history, go I."

A wonderful idea to reimagine the monument so as to honor all the interconnected histories in New Mexico. Is anyone following up.
