Fannie Lou Hamer: A Specially Commissioned Opera

Diana Solomon-Glover is librettist to Is This America?, an operatic performance about Fanny Lou Hamer, presented and commissioned by the Santa Fe Opera and performed at a retired oil tanker in Brooklyn Harbor. Is This America? previews the full opera, This Little Light of Mine, which will be presented in full in the coming year.

Ms. Solomon-Glover asks deeper questions about our country, the vote and where we are today.

Wow, Kristina! The librettist is as inspirational as her subject:
"It is not [as some are saying] that our country is not recognizable; it is perhaps that we are just recognizing the reality of our country--which was founded on a lofty ideal but predicated on excluding the descendents of slaves...and you too, if you were not a white male landowner." Let's recognize the truth of our history and rededicate ourselves to justice for all.

I agree. She motivates me to learn and listen and act where I can...can't heal what can't be seen....

I agree wholeheartedly. We can't improve until we face facts. Yet some believe that this is unpatriotic. It is difficult to understand how, if we are with actual facts. Our kids need to know how we got here - and indeed, what "here" really is. We see this now in Santa Fe, as adherents of the "bloodless reconquest" cry "cancel culture" when anyone challenges them. How can we face this in a civil and constructive way?
